How the options actually compare

Blanes is the last stop on the R1 railway, which makes it one of the few Costa Brava towns with a real train option. The comparison:

Private transfer

Cost
€135 per vehicle
Time
About 1 hour, door to door
Best for
Families, groups, luggage, late arrivals, campsites outside the centre

Train (R1) via Sants

Cost
Per person, plus getting to Sants first
Time
About 1h 30 on the train, plus the connection at each end
Best for
Solo travellers staying near the station

Coach

Cost
Per person, timetabled
Time
Two hours or more
Best for
Budget travel, arriving in the middle of the day

Taxi

Cost
Metered, plus an airport supplement
Time
Similar to a private transfer
Best for
Occasionally, for one or two people

Blanes station is a couple of kilometres inland from the beach and the hotels, so the train is not quite the door-to-door it looks like on a map: the shuttle to Sants, the R1 to the end of the line, then a bus or taxi down to the sea. It is a fine way to travel light. It is a poor way to arrive with a family's luggage at ten at night.

The first town of the Costa Brava

The Costa Brava officially starts at Blanes — at the rock of Sa Palomera on the beach, which divides the long sand of the Maresme from the coves to the north. The town is more Catalan than the resorts beyond it: a working fishing port, a Monday market, and the Marimurtra botanical garden on the headland, which is worth the visit on its own.

Most visitors stay in hotels along the S'Abanell beach, in apartments in the centre, or at the campsites on the road out towards Lloret. We drop at any of them at the same fare — say which when you book. Campsites in particular are worth naming precisely; there are several, and they are not next to each other.

Hotel, apartment or campsite

Same fare anywhere in Blanes. Name the campsite — there are several.

Timed to your flight

The car waits 60 minutes free from touchdown, however late the flight.

Sized for the stay

A Vito or V-Class for a family and its cases. The table shows the price.

How long the drive takes

About an hour for roughly 85 km: around Barcelona on the ring road, up the C-32 along the Maresme coast to its end at Palafolls, then the last few kilometres across the Tordera into Blanes. From central Barcelona it is closer to 55 minutes. The C-32 toll is not in the fare.

Summer weekends add time, as they do on every road out of Barcelona towards the sea. The fare agreed at booking is the fare charged, whatever the traffic does.

Lloret, Tossa and onwards

Lloret de Mar is ten minutes beyond Blanes and has its own row and its own page; Tossa de Mar is twenty minutes further along one of the best coast roads in Catalonia. Coming the other way, Calella and the Maresme towns are fifteen minutes back down the coast. The Costa Brava page covers the whole run from here to the French border.

Flying into Girona instead? Girona Airport is about 40 minutes from Blanes — closer than Barcelona — and the Girona Airport page has that fare.

Common questions

How much is a transfer from Barcelona Airport to Blanes?

From €135 for the Toyota Corolla, fixed per vehicle rather than per person. A minivan for a larger group is €170. Prices exclude VAT and the C-32 toll; 10% VAT is added only if you ask for an invoice.

How long does it take from Barcelona Airport to Blanes?

About an hour for roughly 85 km, around the city and up the C-32 to the end of the motorway, then across the Tordera into town. From central Barcelona about 55 minutes.

Is Lloret de Mar the same price as Blanes?

No — Lloret is ten minutes further and has its own row in the price table. If you are staying in Lloret, book Lloret; the Lloret de Mar page has the fares.

Can we take the train to Blanes?

Yes, Blanes is the end of the R1 line. The airport is not on it, so it means the shuttle to Sants first and then about an hour and a half on the train, and the station is a couple of kilometres from the beach. Fine with a rucksack; three legs with luggage.

Do you drop at campsites?

Yes, at the same fare. There are several around Blanes and on the road to Lloret, so give us the name of the campsite rather than just the town when you book.

Do you carry child seats?

Yes. Child, baby and booster seats are fitted before the car is dispatched — ask when you book. Pushchairs travel in the boot; mention them so the vehicle is sized for them alongside the cases.
